Speaking of the death penalty, you may be interested in the case of Corey Maye being aggressively poked at by Radley Balko here. Scroll to the bottom for the first post in this series. This is getting next to zero attention in the media though blogs are picking it up like crazy, it's an even more egregious case than the Tookie Williams case, and at the moment the guy is still alive.
In fear for the safety of his 8-month-old daughter, Maye shot an intruder who broke into his home in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, the intruder he shot was a cop engaging in either a no-knock or short-knock raid (this is in dispute) as part of an anti-drug sting operation. Maye has no criminal record and wasn't named on the warrant. For the crime of defending himself against a home intruder, he is now on death row.
