Bob Moog died on August 22nd after a 4 month battle with brain cancer. Thanks to his genius, music's timbral landscape will never be the same. Why you ask? Because he is the man who brought analog synthesis to the masses.
After first designing large modular analog synths he eventually brought the world a synth called the Minimoog. Original copies of this axe are highly sought after. He recently released an updated version of the Minimoog with more functionality, and the addition of MIDI.
Here is a wonderful article I found on the man.

Hey Rich,
I'm glad you dug my little memorial of Bob Moog. I've gotten some really nice feedback on that piece, if not a whole lot of comments posted. Thought I'd share a line from an e-mail I received that I thought turned a particularly nice phrase, "He'll forever be remembered by those of us who remember when art was science and science was art."

Except for that "dark" part of his background, Bob rocked... You know, the part where he caused an otherwise normal composer/keyboardist to have a sex change.

Heh -- funny you should mention Bob Moog's dark side. In the Moog documentary, Bob relays this story about an interview he did with some reporter in the late 1960s or very early 1970s. This was still a time when many people thought the concept of producing music with electronics was apocryphal. At the end of the interview, the reporter leans over close to Bob and says, "but Mr. Moog, aren't you ashamed of what you've done!?"
