A very blustery day...
posted by John @ 1:51 PM

Sad news for Pooh fans all over the globe, myself included. Two of the most beloved voice actors have passed away.

The most wonderful thing about Tigger was...he was the only one. Now there is none. (more...)

Pooh's longtime companion, Piglet was also silenced today. (more...)

Oh bother.

Fairfield Glassworks and Tape Dispensary Changes Stripes, Colors
posted by John @ 10:09 PM

In our first show we mentioned that our recording 'studio' has a pumpkin-colored wall. Technically, the name of the color is 'Pumpkin Patch'. Having put no less than 4 coats of the stuff on one wall and having difficulty covering some of my daughter's early attempts at cave drawings, I decided that it was not...well...doing it for me. There are a few things in the room that are various shades of blue, and while orange and blue go together quite nicely, it never dawned on me that I was inadvertently turning the room into a Syracuse University shrine. That had to stop. The new color is a darker orange, almost like the inside of a blood orange (how appropriate). The official color name is 'New Penny'. Which leads me to asking this - what's your favorite paint color name and if anyone knows, who has the lucky job of naming these colors? Send your responses to feedback@bloodyveg.com.

Upcoming Show Highlight
posted by Rich @ 10:44 AM

I had opportunity to record a classical guitarist on Wednesday who played a special concert at my brother's house, just for my family. His name is Miguel Pico, and he is originally from Colombia S.A. and now lives in NC. He's in town with his lovely wife Claudia, their children, and his beautiful sister-in-law, Rosio. Wonderful people. We will be playing a selection from his performance in our next show.

No Show This Coming Week
posted by Rich @ 7:20 PM

We would like to apologize in advance for not being able to produce a show this Sunday/Monday. Unfortunately circumstances beyond our control have made it so that we simply can not get together on Sunday (6/19) to record the show. We do humbly apologize and ask you to hang with us until next week, when maybe we'll do TWO shows to make up! :-)

We do both have lives outside of our immensely popular Podcasting careers, and sadly, they got in the way this time. We will endeavor to make sure this happens as little as possible, since we do enjoy the heck out of doing the show, and hope you enjoy it along with us.

Please Help Spread The Word!
posted by Rich @ 11:19 AM

Cool things are afoot. John and I haven't really done any active promotion for the show (that begins soon), but despite that, our hits per day increased about 8x on Monday. Typically we've been getting around 100 hits per day, but Monday we got around 800. Most of those happened after 8 PM, after the show was posted. Tuesday, we did well, but not as well.

Help be a part of our growth. If you've heard our show, and liked what you heard, please tell your friends. Word of mouth referrals are powerful advertising tools. Thanks.

Our Recording Rig (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Compressor)
posted by Rich @ 7:57 AM

our rig
Our recording rig is simple by studio standards, but very complex by home computer user standards.

It consists of:

  • Mackie MS-1202 mixer
  • Alesis ML-9600 2-track master recorder
  • Urei LA-22 stereo compressor
  • dBX 266XL stereo compressor
  • Behringer HA-4700 4 channel headphone amplifier
  • Shure KSM-27 condenser microphone (x2)
  • Electrovoice PL-10 dynamic microphone (x2)
  • Rack mount surge suppressor
  • AKG K-271, and AKG K-55 (x3) closed ear headphones
  • Software based sample player
  • Assorted custom cables to hook everything up
  • Mic stands, pop filters, bungee cords, cattle prods, etc...
The Mackie 1202 is used to combine the inputs from our microphones, and from the sample player. It also has two free mic inputs if we ever want to do interviews in the future. The balanced stereo main outs of the Mackie go to the balanced inputs of the ML9600, and the outputs on the ML-9600 are wired to the inputs of the headphone amplifier. We each get our own set of headphones and because the HA-4700 has four channels, we have very precise control over our individual headphone cue mixes. The software sample player is used to play our intro/outro music, and any other bumper/cue sounds we require.

Where people often get lost in audio production, is with using devices like compressors. This is simply a device that can be set to attenuate the peaks (loud parts) of the signal passing through the compressor, to make the volume of the program more uniform. If one of us accidentally (or purposely) says something very loud, the compressor will reduce the height of that transient and make the signal more uniform, not distorting the input of the Masterlink. Devices like compressors are typically wired to a console's Insert Points, of which the Mackie has four. One for each mic input.

I would like to thank my friends at Victor's House Of Music in New Jersey, for taking really good care of me when I bought the Masterlink, the Behringer, and other assorted accessories for this project. Drop by their web site some time.

-Rich

Our First Recording Session
posted by Rich @ 12:21 AM

Today John and I had our first show recording session. All in all it was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed myself immensely. We needed to work a few kinks out of our gear, and ourselves, but I think we did great considering neither of us had been on the business end of a microphone before.

The show will be online (I believe) by Monday afternoon.

Enjoy.

This Is A Test Of The Emergency Podcast System
posted by Rich @ 3:16 PM

OK, not really. But if all things happen according to plan, I will be in a van down by the river tomorrow evening, with John, taping our first show. I'm a little bit excited! I'm also a bit nervous... this is like performing in front of people and that always scared me.

Spinal Tap's Amps Actually Go Only To 10
posted by Rich @ 9:22 PM

In a recent shocking revelation from British Investigative Journalist Clive Smithson, it was found that Spinal Tap's amplifiers do not really go to eleven. Smithson, while on tour with the super-band doing a story, smuggled one of their amplifiers out to a local electronics shop and had it tested. The amplifier tested actually only went to ten, but had the faceplate altered and renumbered 1-11, instead of the standard 1-10. Smithson was quoted as saying, "I just can't believe this. I feel so violated. Next I'll find out that they never really existed or something unbelievable like that."

In The Field, Too!
posted by Rich @ 10:33 PM

Today was a good day. I brought the recording rig over to John's house and we recorded a little voice-over that he did, that you'll be hearing in the beginning of our show during the intro music. This is good because the rig worked in the field (which I knew it would), and we got something done which needed to be done before we could record our first show.

I spent the last hour editing it into the final product. I like it. Now we'll see if john does. :-)

Eureka! It WORKS!
posted by Rich @ 7:33 PM

I'm wicked stoked right now. I went up to the recording studio where I work and finally grabbed those PL-10 microphones. I just now managed to find the time to wire up the whole recording rig and give it a dry run, and it sounds SLAMMIN. Despite all of my fears, the compressor works fine. When it actually has signal going into it the meters work perfectly. Go figure. There is literally only one piece of the puzzle missing. When I ordered pop filters they only had one in stock, and I should have the second one by next weekend.

I do, and I do, and I do for you kids...
posted by Rich @ 9:05 PM

On a more serious note...

Well, we're getting close to actually producing audio segments. For those of you out there eagerly awaiting that, I'll explain where we are as of now.

The main and only holdup is that I have been unable to hook up with a friend to borrow a few pieces gear. For those who are interested, I'm talking about a Urei, LA-22, 2-channel compressor, and two Electrovoice PL-10 microphones that John and I will be using to mic ourselves. With luck I'll have it all on Saturday.

Today I was expecting the Gator GR6S rack case to arrive, in which I'll put all of this gear, but instead found a note from the UPS man saying that a signature was required for delivery. Nice. The guy I ordered that from didn't tell me about that, so I had to get ahold of UPS (fortunately where I work we have a UPS account and get priority access to their customer service people), and go pick it up in Rome. Driving to Rome sucks since the New Hartford facility is SO MUCH CLOSER. So much for efficiency.

So now I have the rack and have loaded it with all of the gear (that is in my possession), and wired it all together.

So yes, we're very close. If we don't have audio content within two weeks, I give you permission to find John and give him a Turkish Feet Beating.

[Oh how I hate this serious stuff...]

Bob Dylan and James Brown To Co-Host New Talk Show
posted by Rich @ 7:04 PM

UTN TV recently announced the signing of an agreement with Bob Dylan And James Brown to co-host a new late night talk show. Both performers have been growing progressively more unhappy touring, and thought more consistency in their working schedule would be a benefit. Show format will be a standard late night style talk show with many details to be determined. Henry Rollins has been selected to be musical director.
